My novel Queen for a Day was nominated for The Kirkus Prize. The Jewish Book Council chose it to be one of ten fiction books included in its 2021 list of recommended books. Stories of mine have appeared in Prairie Schooner, Tikkun,The Southern Review, Glimmer Train, Witness, Fifth Wednesday, storySouth, Green Mountains Review and other literary magazines and have been cited in editions of Best American Short Stories and Best American Nonfiction. One was a finalist for the Nelson Algren Awards. I am a recipient of a New York Foundation for the Arts Fiction Fellowship.
I have been writing fiction and personal essays for a long time. For many years, I earned a living doing freelance writing of one sort or another–journalism, newsletters, business brochures, young adult nonfiction books, et cetera. I also copyedited mass-market novels. My stories and essays have been and/or will be published in Tikkun, The Southern Review, Prairie Schooner, Glimmer Train, Witness, Fifth Wednesday, Green Mountains Review, storySouth and The Baltimore Review. I received a New York Foundation for the Arts Fiction Fellowship and stories of mine have been cited in editions of Best American Short Stories and Best American Essays. I am the mother of Benjamin, now 33, and Samantha, 36, and I am married to Phillip Margulies, who is also a fiction writer. We all live in Washington Heights. Queen for a Day was inspired by my life as Benjy’s mother.
